Through Lareau’s (2003) lens of “Concerted Cultivation”, this interactional ethnography explores the relationships between mentors and mentees at a Community Bike Shop. Lareau’s (2003) work focuses on how middle-class parents raised and created rich moments for children learning. This community bike shop, located in the deep south, is a central point for many disadvantaged youths to become empowered and enriched through the activities developed by the founding member. Through this 13-month study, we found that these moments of empowerment created at this community bike shop were not only led by the leaders but also by the youths. These rich moments fostered multiple opportunities to develop both social and cultural capital otherwise reserved for middle-class families.
